The world is mourning the loss of a phenomenal woman. Born Marguerite Ann Johnson, Dr. Maya Angelou is one of America’s famous author and poet. Her accomplishments just to mention a few includes seven autobiographies, three books of essays, books of poetry, plays, movies, television show appearances spanning more than 50 years. She received more awards than you can count on both hands put together and she possesses 30 honorary doctoral degrees.
She fell into the occupation as a poet and writer after she dabble in other occupations as a young adult. She lived in Egypt and Ghana during the days of decolonization. She gave back to the community in numerous ways. She taught at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was an active member of the Civil Rights movement in the United States and worked with both Rev. Martin Luther King Jr and Malcom X.
What was the secret to such a successful life, on may ask? What drove her to achieve so much after coming from such humble beginnings and having so many missteps in her life? The answer to this and other questions have been left with us in her work and can be found in her legacy.
