Southampton and Senegal attacking midfielder Sadio Mane will miss the Africa Cup of Nations because of a calf injury. Southampton’s Senegal forward Sadio Mané has been ruled out of this month’s Africa Cup of Nations after picking up a calf injury in the Premier League win over Arsenal on New Year’s Day.
“Sadio has an injured calf muscle. It will be four to six weeks [out],” Southampton’s manager, Ronald Koeman, said after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich in the FA Cup third round. “Senegal maybe will call him up and see the player but he will not play in the Africa Cup of Nations.“
Senegal compete in Group C in Equatorial Guinea, starting on 17 January, along with Ghana, Algeria and South Africa.
Mané joined Southampton, currently fourth in the league, from the Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg on transfer deadline day last September. The 22-year-old scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win against Arsenal but limped off before the break.
